Electronic Lantern Competition

I personally feel that this competition offers students the opportunity to encourage students to explore their skills, not only that it also encourages student to engage with issues which are important to them.

While looking at other lanterns:
While looking at other lanterns, I had a feeling that most of the schools had beautiful lanterns too. And of course, we were scared that the other school will beat us because of their nice lanterns.

While waiting to announce the results:
I think the judges had hard time to decide on the winners as the standard of all the lanterns were high. All of them had fears from time to time. That's true no matter how big we are or brave we can be. There was a sticky feeling within me and there were butterflies in my stomach.

After the results:
Receiving a prize, means that you have achieved some outstanding accomplishment or had made significant progress in personal endeavours. But unfortunately, my group didn’t win any prize but my other friends’ teams’ hardwork paid off, they won. They shared their happiness with us to encourage us. I feel pleased and proud of about their achievement. I was very happy because my friends’ teams won and not only that, Henderson has been winning 1st prize consistently.

Our thanks:
Obviously, my thanks go to lots of people, my school, Henderson Secondary school, my teachers, my other fellow friends. But my special thanks go to a very important person, who motivated us and guide us along the competition. It’s no other than my teacher, Mr.Ong.

Solar Racer 2011 @ Ngee Ann Polytechinic

Solar Racer team: Teh Wen Khiey. Jefanie Teo Shu Ting, Truong Nguyen Quynh Anh and Dennis Ferbian Kirana

This year, we entered Solar Racer @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic in September. We attended a workshop during the Septembger holiday, 6th and 7th. The workshop has taught us parts of a circuit board, how to solder the components on it and lasly to read the resistor by identifying the colours of the stripes on the resistor.

On the day of the competition, we were told to control the solar car with a radio controller. We volunteered our CCA mates, Wen Khiey and Dennis to control the car. It was an intense compeitions for the both of them as the other schools were very strong. We did our best and pushed through the rounds. Finally emerging as champions

With the knowledge and skills we have learnt from this competition, it will surely benefit us in the future.

Solar Boat 2011

In the Solar Boat Race held in conjunction with the Singapore International Water Festival 2011, DNI Club sent in 3 teams to participate in the annual competition. Our team members spent many weeks during the school holidays to work on the boats, refining and improving the vessels through sheer hard work. On the faithful Saturday morning, our boats did not disappoint and emerged 1st and 3rd in the competition!! Well done once again DNI!!

Automata 2011

DNI Club is participating in the Automata Design Category of the Toy Design Competition 2011. When our design was shortlisted, the students were very excited! The team subsequently started making a prototype of their design. Once the prototype was finished and refinements were made, the team started on the actual artifact. Advised by Mr. Ong, the team managed to finish an amazing product! We're now waiting anxiously for the results to be released =)

National Junior Solar Sprint 2011

Our Secondary One students participated in their first competition of the year! In this year's National Junior Solar Sprint Competition the young 'uns of DNI Club made a peacock-inspired future solar car that was very innovative. Even though they did not clinch any prize for the competition, we were very proud of them as they gave their best! Don't give up! Success is a journey, not a destination! =D

Glider Workshop @ TP 2011

On the 20th of May, 2011, Mr. Chui led a group of students (who have previously participated in the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2011) to attend a workshop at Temasek Polytechnic. The workshop was meant for the students to learn about making gliders with propellers. Our students listened attentively to the explanations given by the friendly Polytechnic lecturers, and they were able to build a magnificent plane. In the friendly competition that followed, our glider was able to beat all the other teams to achieve the furthest distance. Well done DNI Club!!

Cleanwater 2011

In the first week of Term 2, 2011, DNI sent two teams to participate in the Cleanwater Competition. Both teams discussed and did research before turning up for the competition. During the competition, they were very on-task and worked well as a team. Finally, our teams' submissions were awarded the first and second placing in the competition!! Well done DNI Club! Landslide Competition 2011

3 teams from Henderson DNI Club participated in the Landslide Competition 2011. The teams did intensive research and experimentation before stepping into the competition arena. Professionally working as one, all teams came up with innovative and durable designs. The teams managed to clinch all the top prizes of the competition!! What a feat! Well done once again, DNI Club! You did not disappoint Henderson's expectations of you! =D

Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2011

In 2011, DNI Club participated in the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine (SAFMC) for the first time! A prestigious and popular competition, the students knew that they will be facing very strong competition from other schools, including top schools like NUS High School and Raffles Institution. However, our students believe that hard work can triumph over all, and hard work they did put in! After weeks of arduous preparation and rehearsing, one of our team managed to clinch the Gold Award for Aesthetics, and the Bronze Award for Most Creative Design! Kudos to all! Keep up the good work!

In 2010, I have taken part in the following competitions: National Earthquake, Landslide Competition, Solar Sprint.

Earthquake Competition: The competition required the participants to construct a building structure with the use of wooden stick and strings. After which it will be placed on a simulator to simulate an actual earthquake magnitude. Whichever team can withstand the largest magnitude will be crown champion. It was a fun and enjoyable competition after all, though it was time consuming but I have gained much knowledge about the structure’s resistance to earthquake.

Landslide Competition: In this competition we need to shape up a slope with the given requirements from Singapore Polytechnic. Then it will be placed on a simulator to test on the resistance of our slope, thus “satay sticks” were provided for the extra reinforcement. Reinforcement plays important roles in preventing landslide, as their role were to hold the sands together just like knitting. This is why the government should install them when necessary.

Solar Sprint Competition: This competition required teams to construct a solar powered car by using recycled materials. As Singapore Polytechnic (SP) will only provide the participating teams a standard set of materials such as solar-panel, motor, gears etc... However we are allowed to change the electronic components as long as the car doesn’t exceed the pre-requisites set by SP. In this competition we need to research on how to achieve a maximum gear-ratio performance and which types of motors are suitable for solar car.

Earthquake competition: since this was my very first competition in Henderson Secondary School, I felt very nervous and excited at the same time.

Together with my classmate Yuna, both of us were in the same team with one of our senior Xiao Dan. Frankly speaking I had benefited quite a lot from this competition itself, such as the importance of “Teamwork”, “Responsibility” etc…

Even though we did not managed to emerge as Champion but we are still proud of ourselves, due to the hardwork that we had put in.

The most recent competition that I had joined will be the e-Lantern competition. I have no words to describe for this, as my team spent almost everyday staying back in school just to prepare for this competition. I had gained quite a fair bit of knowledge about electrical components, such as the use of Light-Emitting Diode (LED), series connection, parallel connections etc…

The good news for this competition was that my team had clinched the 1st Prize and Most Popular Award. I was shocked when the judges announced the results. Hence I would like to thank my teachers for their valuable advises.

I have already registered myself with Mr Ong for the following competitions in the year 2011. Earthquake competition, Electrifying competition, e-Lantern competition and Trexi competition.

Earthquake Competition: Earthquake Competition is a very unforgettable experience, though my role was to come up with fascinating designs to decorate our structure. But I really enjoyed the fun that we had during the competition period, not forgetting the importance of “Teamwork”. If I were to manage this task by myself, don’t think I would be able to finish it on time.

Trexi Competition: Trexi is a fun and challenging competition, as there are different templates for us to choose from: ‘Horn Trexi’, ‘ Round Trexi’, ‘Square Trexi’ , ‘Oval Trexi’ and ‘Headphone Trexi’. The good thing about this competition is that, there’s no limit to the number of submissions. In the end I had submitted 3 entries to my teacher. Though I did not win any prizes, but the experience that I’ve gained is more important than anything else.

My experience with this year’s DNI Club interschool competitions was a very enjoyable experience. Although I have failed to achieve the targets that I had set for the various competitions, but that does not affect my overall performance in the team. As I have a group of wonderful members who encouraged me to move forward, despite of the mistakes that I have made.

In conclusion, I think that if you try your best at everything, you will have a bright future ahead of you. This can also be achieved throughout your years in school and career. So I should work hard to fill my family and the people I know with pride and joy. When there is something that happens to knock you down, you need to able to stand up on your feet again.

LEGO Bionicle competition:

This competition is about building a hero figure from the six Lego bionicle products which the organiser had given to us and creativity is the key in winning this competition. Before submitting our entry, there are a lot of works to be done: poster design, background description of your hero, giving a name to our hero, hero’s special abilities etc… I had a memorable experience, although I did not win.

Competitions that I would like to take part in year 2011: Landslide competition, Trexi design competition, bionicle competition and maybe joining Earthquake competition. I hope to win more prizes for DNI Club for the year 2011.

Lego Bionicle Design Competition 2010: In the Bionicle Design Competition, I have learnt how to appreciate other people’s design and combine them together. During the competition I had lots of fun, but also encountered problems before the competition such as the sketching of our hero, poster designs etc… However this can be overcome with the help from my fellow DNI club seniors and we managed to secure a 2nd placing for this competition.

Clean Water Challenge 2010: In this competition, I have learnt how to filter cloudy water with just pebble, sand and active carbon. During our practice in school, we faced problems like the water was not clear enough due to the lack of active carbon. In the midst of preparation we have lots of fun and I’ve benefited a lot from my seniors.

In this CCA, I have taken part in Clean Water Competition this year. I had fun as we need to filter the dirty water into clean water. Then the judges will test on the purity of our filtered water. Whichever group has the most purified value will win the competition.

We have begun our training in our school weeks before the competition, as our teachers gave us a pail of soapy water for us to filter in the workshop. In order to do that, we will need to rearrange the given materials (sand, pebble and carbon) accordingly in the bottle, so to see which combinations works well in filtering the given soapy water.

As for the coming year 2011, I’ve registered the following competitions: “E-Lantern” and “Clean Water” with Mr Ong. This time round I hope to achieve something out of the competition.

I participated clean water competition in this year. Through this competition, I experienced how to filter dirty water into clean water by using carbon and sand. I also learnt that different amount volume of carbon and sand can affect the results. Although, my group did not win, but we had gained experienced from it. If we were to participate it again, I think we would do better this time.

What I have achieved/ contributed to the club:

I have won a 5th place in the solar boat competition. Although, it is not the 1st prize, but I felt very happy as the solar boat competition is the first competition that I have took part in.

The competitions that I have registered for 2011:

I have registered E-lantern competition with Mr Ong, although last year my team did not win. However this does not stop me from taking part again. As I felt that creativity plays an important role in this E-lantern competition.

On 22nd Sept, Wednesday, our school participated in the annual e-Lantern competition held by Singapore Polytechnic. DNI club have sent in 3 teams for the competition. The teams were led by Mr Ong Kwang Wei and Mr Eric Yang, with the advise of Mdm Eileen Ang as our design consultant. We were pleased to announce that our lanterns had beat the rest of competitors and clinched 1st Prize, Most Popular Design Award, 3rd Prize and Merit Award.

On the 20th of August, Friday, 10 DNI Club members,together with Mr Chui Kiam Ming and Mr Eric Yang,paticipated in CIP-visiting Henderson's Old Folks' Home. The members are looking forward to the visit. The elderly sure are friendly! The members also enjoy teaching the elderly how to fold origami swans and hearts,and also,communicating with the elderly. The members have learned how to be more open, and also to communicate with the elderly. It has been a great experience for the students! Good Job DNI.

Electrifying Connections 2010

On the 29th of June,Tuesday,Ngee Ann Polytechnic had a Competition called the 2010 SuperScience Olympiad Electrifying Connections. In this competition,the competing teams have to solve electrical problems by designing electrical circuits ,wiring them up and testing the circuits for functionality. The DNI club sent in three teams to compete in the Electrifying Connections Competition.

They did well and demonstrated a upbeat spirit and positive attitudes during the training as well as the competition. What awesome bunch of youngsters! And they really enjoyed themselves in the process of the competition!

Although Yishun Town Secondary got the first place,Bukit Panjang Government High got the second and third place,but we have learned from the competition that teamwork and critical thinking is really very important.

I have to say that the DNI club really did the school proud,even though they didn't win any prizes,by applying critical thinking,close teamwork spirit and fought hard with other school teams in the competition.

We look forward for the next year's SuperScience Olympiad Electrifying Connections 2011 and we'll be stronger.

Solar Boat Competition @ Singapore International Water Festival

On the 27th of June, Sunday, Singapore Polytechnic organized a Singapore International Water Festival at Marina Barrage. They have a slew of activities and competitions available for students to participate, and DNI club sent in 3 teams to compete in the Solar Boat Competition.

On the day of the competition, the teams and the teachers were very anxious as the weather in the morning was very bad. It was raining very heavily, so there was no sun to power the boats. Eventually the sun came out, but it was still not sufficient for all the boats to compete. Finally, when it was noon time, the sun was bright enough for the competition to start!

The competition was conducted as a league, with the faster boats being able to advance to the next stage of the competition. DNI Club sent in 3 teams, Team 1: Ma Yi Heng (4E1), Zhang Xiao (4E1), Li Jia Qi (4E1); Team 2: Le Phuoc Hoang Long (3E1), Wei Xiao Dan (3E3), Liu Jingyan (2E3); Team 3: Lu Jinhong (3E1), Hoang Duy (3E1), Kyi Kyi Sein (2E2). The teams were led by Mr. Chui Kiam Ming and Mr. Eric Yang, with Mdm Eileen Ang being our consultant. Of the three teams that we sent in, Team 2, led by Long from 3E1 obtained the 1st place, and Team 1, led by Yi Heng, won the 2nd place, beating 15 other teams to earn the top 2 positions.

We are exceptionally proud of all our teams, not only the winning teams, as we could really see the effort and time that they put in to improve their designs. Once again, to us, the learning process is more important and valuable to the students then the positions and the prize money.

Well done once again, DNI!!

National Junior Solar Sprint 2010

During the June holidays, a team of 3 DNI students participated in the National Junior Solar Sprint Competition organized by Singapore Polytechnic. The students are Le Phuoc Hoang Long (3E1), Kyi Kyi Sein (2E2) and Chia Yoon Su (1E4). These pupils spent a lot of time after their Mid-Year Exams and even during the June vacation to design and create their own Solar Car. On the day of the competition, the students did bravely and thoroughly enjoyed the healthy competition with teams from other schools. Although the students did not win any prizes, they have learned a lot from the design and innovation process. They cracked their brains to improve their car, and the final design was a vast improvement over the first draft.

DNI Camp 25th-27th May

On the 25th to the 27th of May, DNI club conducted a CCA Camp for its members. The purpose of the camp is to instil camaraderie among the members and foster their design and innovative spirit.

On the first day of the camp, members who were involved in upcoming competitions i.e. Solar Car and Solar Boat competition, worked on their projects, enjoying a stimulating day of discussion and intellectual stimulation. They engaged in vibrant learning through hands-on activities with the teachers who were there to guide them. Members who were not involved in competitions bonded with the Field Studies Club (FSC) through team building games and sports.

On the 2nd day of the camp, the club went with FSC to Sentosa, and over there, DNI members participated in exciting and fun games to build up their team spirit. Some of these games were even designed by the members themselves! In the afternoon, the competition kids continued to put in their heart and soul into their competition preparation. Under the hot sun, they continually test out their designs and tried their best to perfect them.

On the last day of the camp, DNI proceeded to a more free and easy day at East Coast Park. Many of the students chose to rent bicycles and went around the park, enjoying the scenery and the time spent with their friends. Some of the students sat down at a pavilion to look after the bags, as well as chatted among themselves. All in all, we would say that we thoroughly enjoyed the camp!

Storyboarding Conceptualization Workshop

One of the new thrusts of DNI Club is to train the budding artists among the club members to take up comic or drawing design competitions. In order to sharpen our saw, DNI Club organized a Storyboarding Conceptualization Workshop for some of our members, which was conducted by verteran comic artist, Mr. Jerry Hinds. Mr. Hinds is the chairman of the Association of Comic Artists (Singapore), and he has a few publications under his name.

The kids learned about the basics of storyboarding from Mr. Hinds, and engaged in some hands-on drawing of comics. They were allowed to show forth their creativity, and the students really enjoyed the session!

Landslide Competition 2010

It was the inaugural Landslide Competition, that Singapore Polytechnic organized in conjunction with the National Earthquake Challenge. In this competition, students are required to design and simulate a landslide environment which can withstand vibration from a vibrating platform. They are also allowed to put more weights on top of the landslide to earn more points, or they could also choose to put satay sticks in the slope to reinforce the slope, but thus penalizing themselves.

On the day of the competition, the 3 teams that DNI sent in were all very focused and teamwork was very evident. They professionally designed their slopes, and cautiously put on the weights and the satay sticks. We did not get a chance to view the other teams do their testing, so we were not able to compare our results with theirs. The waiting for the results in the next few weeks were torturous, to be brief, as we speculate on how our rivals could overcome the faults we committed.

In the end, when the results were announced, 2 our teams did us proud again by obtaining 1st and 2nd places! Both the students and the teachers were shouting for joy, as we couldn't believe our ears! We received the prizes from Singapore Polytechnic on the prize presentation day with pride, as our own designs won the competition!

National Earthquake Challenge 2010

Rumble and tumble!! That is what usually occurs in earthquake-prone countries when the deadly catastrophe strikes. In Singapore, we are blessed in that we almost never experience earthquakes, and even if we do, it is of a small scale. However, it is always good for Singapore students to know more about earthquakes, so that students would get a feel of how people adapt to the disaster.

To this end, Singapore Polytechnic has been organizing the National Earthquake Challenge, and this year, Henderson Secondary School sent in 8 teams to participate. The teams comprise students not only from DNI but also non-DNI students. The teams worked their hearts out during the 2 months that we had before the competition starts, designing structures after structures that could withstand vigorous vibrations. It was a joy and thrill watching the kids work, as they shuttle between the glue gun, the drill, the workshop etc. There was healthy and stimulating discussion all the time, as teams worked together to come up with innovative and strong designs.

On the days of the competition, we brought all our structures down to Singapore Polytechnic and tested them on a large platform that can stimulate 2-dimensional vibrations. Even after many rounds of grueling testings, we had to wait for all the other schools to finish their testings before we could know the results.

On the day that we got to know of the results, we were elated! All our teams obtained some prize! We have 6 teams in the top 10 places, which includes the 1st runner-up. This means that we are sponsored for our trip to Taiwan in September for the IDEERS competition, a national version of the earthquake competition.

Cleanwater Competition @ Singapore Polytechnic

DNI students participated in the Cleanwater Competition organized by Singapore Polytechnic in February. This competition required the students to construct a water filtration system using just sand, charcoal or pebbles that is capable of filtering dirty, colored water into clear, potable water.

The students spent a couple of weeks before the competition trying out different combinations of the materials, and compared the results of the filtration before deciding on the best combination for the competition.

Although when the competition results were announced, the students did not clinch any prize, but they really cherish the learning process and the fun they had and the friendship they forged during the entire training. In retrospect, one would say that these are more important than the prize itself!

Friday Training 19th Feb 2010

Things are starting to get exciting! DNI has now more than 6 competitions in the pipeline, and everyone is busy doing their best preparing for the competitions. One could see some people doing research using the Internet, while some other people are trying to test out their prototypes, in order to find out the winning formula. Groups of budding artists are sitting around the Electronics Lab, busy squeezing their creative juices to come up with some impressive and unique designs. Some of the Sec 1s are piecing Bionicle toy sets together in preparation for an upcoming competition as well. With all the effort, we do hope that there will be fruits of success! DNI, all the best!! =)

Friday Training 29th Jan 2010

During training today, we learned that the tail of a gecko actually helps the reptile to maneuver itself in the air! A passionate researcher was sharing this finding at a TED talk, and all the members of the DNI were fascinated by the beauty and complexity of nature =)

In another TED video, we saw how massive tragedies can be avoided using simple yet innovative methods. A NGO in China is developing warmers for babies so that they will not die of cold so easily. Much, much cheaper than a traditional incubator, the warmer is also very portable and can be used easily by laymen. DNI was convinced through this video that design and innovation can make a huge difference in anybody's lives, and we were enthusiastic about applying our design skills for the community as well.

As such, we spent the rest of the morning doing research, brainstorming and discussing about possible innovative products for the needy of the society. Yuna expressed her wish for a pair of automatic walking shoes to help those with walking difficulties walk, while Jingwen was thinking of using human-powered products to power fans and handphones!

Hopefully we can get to really invent something for elderlies, handipcapped people etc., so that their lives can improve via simple and innovative methods =)

It was yet another exciting day of training for DNI members. After an energizing morning run and PT session, the students sat down to watch another video on design and innovation. These weekly video sessions really helped to open our students' perspectives and aid in giving them some creative stimulus, a component that is very critical to the club.

The students started to sift through the numerous competitions that are available, and decided on the ones they want to participate after discussion with the teachers. Other than the National Earthquake Competition and the Clean Water Competition, competitions that the students are interested in are: Toy Design Competition by Singapore Polytechnic, and Ideas in Action 2010 by Citigroup.

We can foresee that it'll be an exciting year for the club! May we stay discipline and win more awards back for the school! ^_^

Friday Training 15th Jan 2010

During today's training, we have 11 Sec 1 students attached to us for their CCA attachment program. We started the day by watching 3 very interesting videos downloaded from www.ted.com, a website that hosts all resources related to the innovative and cutting-edge talks from TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design). The students were visibly impressed by how design is changing the world in waves. They were inspired to put in their most for the rest of the years as the club tackles different competitions.

After watching the videos, an aptitude test were given to the students, with the particular intent of selecting Sec 1 students who would be suitable for the activities of DNI. The students worked in groups of 3 and tackled questions related to the multiple intelligences of spatial, logical-mathematical, and natural intelligences. The amount of energy and discussion was simply uplifting, as the students engaged one another in generative conversations in an attempt to solve the questions. Some of the answers were very creative and brought new insights to all the members of the club.

After the test, all the students gathered together to discuss the answers before they broke for lunch. After lunch, the club had a fun time of ice-breaking games and they got to know one another more. Finally, the Sec 4 students came up one by one to share about their time in DNI and about the things that they have learned throughout the years in the club. DNI is forever grateful to the Sec 4 students for leading the club in key competitions! We'll miss them!

Friday Training 8 Jan 10

On 8January, we were briefed by our teacher, Madam Ang about what is going to happen this whole year and what are we going to do every week. After briefing, we carried out our stretching exercises which was led by our chairman, Jiaqi. We then proceed to the field for our mass run after doing the exercises. When everyone has completed their 4rounds, we went to the side to do some exercises for cooling down. By the time everyone has cooled down, we went back to the design studio to planned what to do next. In the end, we decided to play the captain's ball game and it ended at 11am as we are having our recess. After our recess, we did reflections for our design studio and the topic was ' My New Year Resolutions ' . It was just nice that everyone finished their reflections at 12.30pm and we were released.

Reflection on Mid-Year Post Exam 3D Day Camp

The first day of the CCA camp, we went to Palau Ubin with the field study club people. We took bus to the changi jetty and took a bump boat to Pulau Ubin. After that, we took a small van to go to the Chek Jawa. After we reach Chek Jawa, The weather over there was very hot and humid. Not only that, there were many mosquitoes over there. We walked around to see the scenery over there.I like the sea at Chek Jawa, the scenery over there were very beautiful. We stayed at there for a while and we went back to Changi Village for our lunch. After that, we took a walk at the Changi coast. That was the last activities we had on day 1. Although it was very tiring, but I had learnt many things through this trip. I enjoyed the trip very much.

The second day of the CCA camp, we went to East Coast Park for a bicycle ride. I enjoyed the bicycle ride. We are supposed to play the team building games at the East Coast Park, but it rained. So in the end, we went back school and play the games. I and my friends did not play the games as the games were organised by us. Even though some people were bickering but it was fun. We did a survival cooking with the NPCC cadet people. We cooked instant noodles; it was very fun as it was the first time I cook with my friends.

The third day of the CCA camp, we ran three rounds at the field. After that, we played captain ball. It was quite fun. We had our break after that. Then now, I am posting my reflections for this three days camp.

Day 1 Trip to Pulau Ubin

We went to Pulau ubin. We went there to take pictures and it was so tiring. We took a bus to change jetty, and followed by the bumpboat to Pulau ubin. We were spending most of our time walking. And Mr chong was asking us to speak more English through the journey as we were all speaking Chinese. We also took picture of a beautiful butterfly on a leaf. After reaching the jetty, we went for a coastal walk there. I saw a green snake on the way. We were walking non stop but I realise we only spent 1hour walking.. It was ridiculous. But the scenery over there was beautiful. The waves in the sea and the wind blowing my hair makes me feel so relaxing. This trip was fun but really tiring.

Day 2 Cycling at east coast park

We went to east coast park to for cycling and roller blading. I was slacking as I was having a bad stomachache. I went to the beach and sat down alone there to enjoy the wind and the moving waves. After that, we were suppose to have team building games but it ended up raining. So we went back to sch. After the rain is over, we started our team building games.

It was rather fun but those few china boys were finding fault with us. Other teams were fine except their team. After that, we had survivor cooking by npcc. It was fun ! But the cooking was tiring. The noodles were quite tasty. Especially the soup. After that , we were dismissed.

Day 3 Captains’ ball in school

We stayed in school today for running and captains’ ball game. I suddenly realise how many PE lessons we’ve missed. Captains’ ball is so boring playing with those china boys with big sizes. We are sure to lose. Had our recess and went blogging for the camp reflection.

On the first day of the camp, we went to Pulau Ubin with the Field Studies Club members. We went to the Changi Jetty and took a bumpboat to Pulau Ubin then we take a small van which can contain 10people to ChekJawa. On the way, there were many trees and it looks almost the same. We could see many sea-creatures, spiders and ants when we are having our walk. We took the boat back to Changi Jetty and eat at Changi Village and at 2pm, we walked back to meet at the ferry terminal then we had a walk at Changi Costal, it was a very long walk as we have to walk to the end of the place and walk to where we first started.

On the second day, we went to East Coast Park with the entire D&I club members. We cycled along the path till the end of the jetty then we ride back to return our bikes. After a while, it rained so we have to walk to a shelter and wait for the rain to stop. After that, we came back to school to play the games. We played the balloon game, ping-pong game, water-bomb game and a game which is played by moving the van-guard sheet to the end of the court while we are standing on it. We had several confusions but after all, we are back to the same again. I think that I have seen most of the member’s true colours, if we didn’t play the game, we wouldn’t have seen it. We had survival cooking with the NPCC people and we cooked instant noodles with a pot and we were supposed to wash it.

On the third day, we ran round the field in the morning. And then, we played captain ball game, I feel that the opponent which we are playing against are very scary as they are older than us so they are much stronger than us. We end the game at around 9 plus and we went back to the Design Studio to drink water and we even sing a birthday song for my friend, XiaoHui as it is her birthday today.

Then we had our break and here I am blogging.

The day Thursday 28th of May. It’s the day where we the Design and Innovation Club went to East Coast Park to cycle. Well it was a really sunny day at first, before it rain at about 12.40pm. We first of course start of by renting bikes. The bike renting shop which we rented from was really cheap compared to the other shops I rented bike from, this shop rental costs only 5 dollars, whereas other shops costs about 7 to 10 dollars. Plus the shop even gives a free drink! While waiting for my teacher to handle the giving of money to the uncle of the shop. I did some warming up. Then finally we head out. First I thought we were going to cycle in a group going the same way but luckily the teacher split us into tiny groups and told us we could go anywhere we want but must be back at 12.15pm near the shop. My friends and I head out the last as we do not know which way to go. We finally headed out, became bored really fast. So I thought of racing the guys, then when I reached the place where there is cable skiing, my peddle fell of. I had to cycle all the way back to the shop which is about 1km with one foot as no one can help me fix it. It really hurts. After reaching back at the shop to change the bike my buttocks had a cramp. So I had to rest for a while, well of course all my friends blame me about it. After I recovered we head out again, we still left about 20mins so I just cycled really fast leaving my friends behind. When we were heading back to the shop to get a drink because we drank finish our drink I finally know how to cycle with no hands yeah.

On the 27th of May, my DNI group went to Pulau Ubin with Field Studies Club. We went there by school bus and boat. It is a long trip. Mr Roland Tan also follow along with my group. I think he is funny because he told a lot of jokes. When we reached there we walked a long the mangroves and we saw a lot of trees and crabs. It is very interesting for me. Some people took photo. I wanted to take photo but I didn’t bring camera and my phone is no battery. On the way, we saw a tower and go to the top. FSC took a video about the trees, crabs and tower. The teachers explained about the Pulau Ubin and mangroves. After that, we take a rest about 5 mins. We turn back to Changi village about 1 o’clock. The teachers gave break for lunch until 2 o’clock. And then, we met at change village and we went to changi coast for walking. We walked along the coast and turn back together. Moreover, on the half way, we saw a snake and the teachers told us pls be careful. It is very dangerous and the snake colour is green. After that we come back to school about 5:30 by school bus. That day was very tired because we walked the whole day.

On the 28th of May, we went to the East Coast about 9 o’clock by school bus. But that day only my DNI group. The FSC group could not follow us because they would make video for Pulau Ubin. That day, our CCA teacher, Mdm Ang and Mr Yang followed us. When we reached there, we rent bicycles and Mr Yang said everybody will paid $5 for rent.Moreover, he said again 1 group 3 ppl and will go together and will give him each group phone numbers. My group was 4 people and they are Russell, Harrison, Josh and me. And then we start cycling along the beach. One the half way, Russell’s bicycle was paddle broke the, so we turn back to bicycle shop for fix it. When we reached there, the shopper change another bicycle and we went again cycling. After cycling, we came back to school about 12:15.When we reached the school, the teachers said we would play some game for fun. So we prepare for the game. After that we played and the teachers gave the prizes who win the game. After that game, I felt my body was very pain. At about 4 o’clock, our group joined to the NPCC for cooking . At 6 o’clock we come back home.

I have learnt to be resilient, not to give up when we meet difficulties. We spent about 3 months in building the solar boat and the times we spent together have successfully allowed us to have a deeper friendship. Although my group did not win, we did gain experience.

We worked very hard for this competition. During the process, we have been facing major problems and yet we tried several times and also seek help from our workshop instructor. Finally we managed to work through everything and won the fourth prize. This was really a fruitful experience.

During this competition, I have learnt to manage my time well and not giving up when we were faced with obstacles. Even though we did not emerge the top 6, we were contented that 4 of our team had won.

For my first experience of taking part in a competition in the D&I Club, I felt that teamwork is actually very important, without teamwork, we would not success. I also learnt that we need to persevere and have a never give up attitude towards everything we do and always try it till we success and not giving up half way through out the process. Lastly, I have learnt to be independent and not depend on our teacher for everything because one day, we still have to be dependent and someday if we face some challenges on work, the only person we can dependent on is only ourselves. Even though we got the 5th position, we shouldn’t be too proud and should be more modest and think of ways to improve ourselves and also do our best for everything we does.

On the 5th of september, four henderson boys represented henderson to take part in the E-lantern competition, they designed this lantern called the LIAN PU lantern. The lian pu is an example of the chinese culture on the "bian lian".

Their lantern won the hearts of the judges and the people over there, and they won 1st place as well as $1000 cash voucher.

On the 5th of september, our three henderson girls won 2nd position in E-lantern competition. They designed a lantern called the singa girl, which was simply great (i.e. jaw-dropping cool looking fantastic marvelous excellent beautiful elusive magnificent sexy awesome unbelievable dashing)!!! The gals worked very hard, and won $500 cash voucher.

REFLECTION FOR THE "NATIONAL JUNIOR SPRINT COMPETITION"

Having taken part in this competition, which is the National Junior Solar Sprint Competition 2007, I have learnt that I have to be independent and not to depend on others. Having two team mates which makes u three, it appears to be two because one of them always seems to disappear. For the actual competition me and my other team mate managed to win the two prizes and this is when I learnt that not giving up and team work is the way to success!

Having taking part in the National Junior Solar Sprint 2008. I have to make a solar car that look like a F1 car, this competition teach us to make use of solar energy and to protect the environment. During the making of the solar, we faced many difficulties like the solar car couldn’t move as there is not enough sunlight or some thing happens to the motor that make the car couldn’t move. At the actual day of the competition, my two team mates did not come as they already went back to their country I have to call my best friend to replace them. I have learnt to be independent, but anyway we managed to win third runner-up in the Best Designed car. This is the most unforgettable experience in my life.

Having taken part in the Dart competition I have learnt that being independent is an important thing. It is because I cannot depend on my team member. 3 team members in a team but it turns out that one of them doesn’t regularly attend the session to help with the competition and also not help in the building of the car. But after all he made it for the actual competition and soon I realised that teamwork is very important, it is the key to success!

Making the model of the park was difficult. But its thanks to the leader that made the plan. It took us quite awhile to make the whole park/ I like the idea from the leader to make use of the rain water to flush toilets. At the competition, we were there nervous, I thought to myself that we were going to lose as I see that the other competitors parks were so nice. But when the judges announce the winners of the competition, he called our team, I was so surprised. It was the first time I won 1st price.
