During training today, we learned that the tail of a gecko actually helps the reptile to maneuver itself in the air! A passionate researcher was sharing this finding at a TED talk, and all the members of the DNI were fascinated by the beauty and complexity of nature =)
In another TED video, we saw how massive tragedies can be avoided using simple yet innovative methods. A NGO in China is developing warmers for babies so that they will not die of cold so easily. Much, much cheaper than a traditional incubator, the warmer is also very portable and can be used easily by laymen. DNI was convinced through this video that design and innovation can make a huge difference in anybody's lives, and we were enthusiastic about applying our design skills for the community as well.
As such, we spent the rest of the morning doing research, brainstorming and discussing about possible innovative products for the needy of the society. Yuna expressed her wish for a pair of automatic walking shoes to help those with walking difficulties walk, while Jingwen was thinking of using human-powered products to power fans and handphones!
Hopefully we can get to really invent something for elderlies, handipcapped people etc., so that their lives can improve via simple and innovative methods =)
Things are starting to get exciting! DNI has now more than 6 competitions in the pipeline, and everyone is busy doing their best preparing for the competitions. One could see some people doing research using the Internet, while some other people are trying to test out their prototypes, in order to find out the winning formula. Groups of budding artists are sitting around the Electronics Lab, busy squeezing their creative juices to come up with some impressive and unique designs. Some of the Sec 1s are piecing Bionicle toy sets together in preparation for an upcoming competition as well. With all the effort, we do hope that there will be fruits of success!
