Toy Design Competition 2013 (Automata Category)

In March this year, the Design and Innovation Club participated in the Toy Design Competition 2013 (TDC13) Automata Category.
This annual competition is organized by Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Singapore (Sales) Pte Ltd.

In this competition that was open to all secondary school students in Singapore, participants were required to construct Automata toys, consisting of snail cams, pinwheel gears, cranks and pulley system.
23 schools participated and 38 submissions were received. Despite facing tough competition from the many entries of top schools and with the standards of the submissions raised, all 3 Henderson’s entries were shortlisted as the top 15 submissions.
Besides Design and Innovation Club members participating, students, who are aesthetically inclined, from other CCAs (Band, Choir and Basketball) are roped in this year to inject a new perspective to this competition. The students faced a lot of difficulties, as they have no prior experience in the construction of Automata toys and thus, sacrificed most of their June holidays working in the workshop. However, they persevered as they are determined to realize their design for submission.

Their hard work and sacrifice was rewarded when one team emerged as the champion and the other 2 teams clinched 2 merit awards. The champion received a $500 HP product voucher, $200 cash and a trophy for the school. The merit awards each received a $50 HP product voucher and $50 cash.
